Since I began playing Garry's Mod, I always wanted to make a gamemode that was exactly like Age of empires 2.
Unofficially this was my first gamemode; I made the base files and my first couple of unofficial models too (unofficial because they were exported from hammer with a program called 'proper') However, I didn't do much else with the project, simply because I didn't know how to program or model back then. I then made house models for the houses and town centers, all based off age of empires 2.
I even learned how to mask out areas of the model and apply different colors to them. A simple map was made with a dozen layers of just flat grass, with plenty of space for models and testing. I had big plans for the rest of the map too, a beautiful lobby hidden away in a dark alley as if it were some exclusive hidden club. I didn't make enough of this section to have screenshots of it. |
Jumping ahead a few gamemodes, its now April 2014...
I was studying anatomy and topology for the human figure for my Chicken Chaser project, and I began to make a super low poly figure. He looked like a little villager from age of empires and it was then I realised that I could remake microwars or at least try to. In the gamemode I got to work on selecting and controlling the units and applying a walking animation to them. |
What Happened?
Well the normal NPC movement in gmod was obsolete, and their NextBot NPC, used in the Left 4 Dead series, wasn't suitable for the micro size of the models, they would run into things and dance back and forth because their obstacle collision box was huge compared to the little men. There was no way for me to change this so I gave up on the project and focused on Chicken Chaser.
