2013 DEC Overview
After going through the nostalgia of Halo 3, I wondered if I could recreate the king of the hill gamemode in gmod.
Originally I was first interested in the hill model itself, especially on how the texture could be made using material proxies to get the scrolling effect. I started KOTH by making a selection of basic models in blender ( circles and rectangles ), I then created the texture and material for the hills, nicely replicating the pattern in Halo. I didn't know much about collision detection back then so I had to come up with a system that would allow me to know when a player steps inside the hill...
So here's the breakdown of what I came up with, - see image on the right:
I developed a scripted weapon for placing the hills which admins were able to spawn. The controls were simple, allowing the admin to place the hill and adjust its:
The hills were indexed with a visible number and could be removed with a console command. After the admin has finished editing, it saves the hills to data/koth/[mapname].txt. It was pretty much finished but I never released it. It looks cool but it's still just Half-Life 2 deathmatch. |
